Economic Development

Area for economic development in Ontario, Ohio

As chair of the Economic Development Committee since 2022, I have worked with fellow council members to advance several key initiatives:
   •  Lift the Campus District Overlay: Eliminating unnecessary dual zoning restrictions to promote development.
   •  Develop a Comprehensive Community Plan: Created with direct resident input via community surveys, ensuring growth aligns with community priorities.
   •  Update Zoning Regulations: Aligning land use policies with the vision outlined in the comprehensive plan.
   •  Establish a Community Investment Corporation: To encourage local economic expansion and job creation.

New  Initiatives

Ontario has a workforce of 10,629, yet only 339 residents both live and work in the city. The 2023 Richland County housing study identified a significant shortage of residential housing. To address this, I propose expanding single-family homes, two-family residences, townhouses, and condominiums while avoiding high-density, multi-story apartment buildings that could strain infrastructure resources. Housing expansion must be thoughtful and strategic to ensure that growth does not negatively impact existing city services.

Additionally, revitalizing vacant commercial properties, particularly Ontario Commerce Park, remains a top priority. The primary obstacle to development is a lack of electrical power. I have personally met with state officials and JobsOhio to resolve this issue and will continue advocating for necessary infrastructure improvements to attract businesses and jobs to our city.
